Rhondda Cynon Taf Heritage Park celebrate Month of the Military Child (RCT)

On April 23, 2026, RCT Heritage Park hosted a celebration for the Month of the Military Child, welcoming 72 Armed Forces connected children from 8 schools. The event was coordinated by Rhiannon Seymour and her team, with support from SSCE Cymru, the Army’s Regional Engagement Team, and Jamie Ireland, AFLO.

Councillor Maureen Webber, the Armed Forces Champion attended, delivering a speech reaffirming Rhondda Cynon Taf Council's commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant and encouraging support for Armed Forces families. Volunteers helped create an engaging programme with historical workshops, creative performances, and a mine tour.

The Royal Welsh Military Band provided music throughout the event, filling the air with lively and patriotic tunes that enhanced the atmosphere and made the celebration feel especially festive. Their stirring performances not only added to the sense of occasion but also offered a fitting tribute to the families and children of the Armed Forces, creating a memorable soundtrack for the day’s activities.

Otto Aday, a Never Such Innocence Music practitioner, who is originally from RCT, inspired young attendees by encouraging creativity and self-expression in his sessions. With Otto's support, the young people wrote an original song reflecting their experiences, later performed at the event for the participants, local councillors and charity representatives. Knowing the completed song will be broadcast on BFBS added pride, recognition and a strong sense of achievement.

A banner-making workshop offered another outlet for expression and teamwork, with many pupils creating something tangible to represent their identity and shared experiences. Three older boys even returned during lunch to continue working on their creations.

Feedback from young people and staff showed the day’s impact. One participant called it “the best day ever,” reflecting how valued and included they felt, while teachers noted visible happiness and confidence. Several schools also shared a renewed commitment to support their Service children through more targeted opportunities.

Throughout the day, the children explored the park’s rich heritage, shared their stories, and forged connections with peers who understand the unique experiences of Armed Forces families. The celebrations served not only to honour their backgrounds, but also to foster a sense of community and pride among all participants. It was a truly memorable event that highlighted the contributions and strengths of Service children in RCT.
