Help for Heroes: a special Month of the Military Child social impact project

Wales

SSCE Cymru was delighted to work with Rhys Edwards, Community Fundraising Manager at Help for Heroes, on a special Month of the Military Child social impact project with Ysgol Bae Baglan, Ysgol Pen Y Bryn and Haverfordwest High VC School. The project encouraged Service children, young people and their peers to raise awareness, take positive action and fundraise in support of Help for Heroes.

Pupils across the three schools showed fantastic creativity, teamwork and leadership, making a meaningful contribution to a charity closely connected to the Armed Forces community.

Rhys said: “It has been a privilege to work with Jo and the team from SSCE Cymru over the last few months, particularly on this year’s Month of the Military Child project. Thank you to everyone from all three schools for the effort they have put into their individual activities. At Help for Heroes, we always say it does not matter what you do, just do something. Do something that interests you, perhaps steps you outside your comfort zone, and feels fun and invigorating. Our military families signed up to ‘do their bit’, and you have certainly done your bit this year to support them. Well done, and here’s to 2027.”

Although the overall total is still being confirmed, the fundraising efforts have already been inspiring. At Ysgol Bae Baglan, Year 7 and 8 pupils completed two sponsored fun runs, while Years 5 and 6 are planning a walk up Pen y Fan in June.

Children from Ysgol Pen y Bryn in Conwy spent April planning and completing a range of fundraising activities for Help for Heroes. The whole school then came together for a celebration day of activities delivered by Character Education Life Skills (CELS), marking an incredible £1,108.44 raised for the charity.

At Haverfordwest High VC School, Military Children, Families and Buddies took part in a sponsored Tree Planting project in the school grounds. With support from Hero the Bear, The VC Gallery and Haverfordwest Rotary Club, pupils made a lasting contribution to their school environment and wider community.

SSCE Cymru would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Rhys, Help for Heroes, Ysgol Bae Baglan, Ysgol Pen y Bryn, Haverfordwest High VC School and everyone who supported these activities. Your enthusiasm, generosity and commitment helped make this a truly meaningful and memorable Month of the Military Child project, celebrating the positive difference Service children, young people and their peers can make within the wider school and Armed Forces community.
