Jo (SSCE Cymru Participation Lead Officer) and Mrs Leah Burnett (Brecon High School’s Family Forces Officer) were pleased to be invited to visit members of Haverfordwest High School’s Forces Life Club on their Summer camp.
Mr Reg White, a team leader at Haverfordwest High VC school, applied for the Supporting Service Children in Education in Wales Fund (SSCE-WF) to facilitate an outdoor education project for a group of 28 Service children / young people from the school. The company the school worked with for this project is Paddle West, a Pembrokeshire based outdoor learning company that promotes participation in adventurous activities which has a hugely positive impact on a child’s well-being, education and development.
On day one, the Service children / young people enjoyed activities such as archery, axe throwing, team building and bushcraft skills followed by day two, paddle sports, including canoeing, stand-up paddle boards and raft building. There was lots of fun and laughter. And after an exchange of best practice examples and ideas between key members of staff that support Service children / young people in their educational settings, lets hope we can look forward to some more collaborative projects in the future to bring this cohort of pupils together across more regions in Wales.
